COVALENT MODE

Separate modes of play which consist of significantly different mechanics but exist within the same environment. Outcomes for covalent modes are usually shared between one another. Examples of such modes include turret or driving sections in a FPS game, or a racing section in a platforming game.

Borderlands smoothly switches between its two major covalent modes, shooting and driving, although the latter is clearly a secondary concern.”
