Methodical busywork in which players carefully scan for and interact with each and every clue, character or object in a given scene so as not to miss anything. This behaviour can be triggered by a lack of engagement, poor signposting of system goals, or an over-reliance on collecting actions. Vacuuming is a result of players highly valuing the the system while discarding the metaphor. Game worlds which are thaumatic or highly entertaining in their own right are less likely to inspire such behaviour.

“There’s no arguing that Skyrim is a world packed with things to do and dragons to kill, but, like most Bethesda games, there’s little convincing players not to simply vacuum up every item they see, just in case.”
